Learn more about Music at Good Shepherd

Our congregation often invites other musical groups and artists to share their gifts. Below are some examples of recent and past events.

Good Shepherd Concert Series

The Chicago Gargoyle Brass are back! This year’s program, entitled “Imaginary Journey,” features world premieres of new works and arrangements for brass quintet, organ, and percussion commissioned by the ensemble. “Imaginary Journeys,” written for the ensemble by Chicago-area composer, Mark Lathan, is a three-movement work that takes the listener on rocket-powered interstellar adventure, inspired by recent astronomical discoveries. Other highlights include movements from Bach’s Reformation cantata, “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80,” an epic arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s ever-popular “Suite from The Firebird,” and many others. Free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected and a reception will follow.

Visiting Music Groups

On Friday, November 2, we welcome the 75 member Augustana College Symphony Orchestra (Rock Island, IL) to Good Shepherd in concert at 7:00 p.m. Through the voices of Joan Tower, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and George Gershwin, the symphony orchestra explores an expansive and inclusive vision of what is means for music to be made in, and by, America. Free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected.

Your help is needed! Signup here if you are able to house two or more students Friday evening and/or help with providing/serving a taco bar dinner before the concert. Thank you!
