40 Words in 40 Days: Atonement

Atonement

The work of Jesus to restore our relationship with God.

Romans 5:10-11

10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11 But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

The Mystery of the Atonement

We are told that Christ was killed for us, that His death has washed out our sins, and that by dying He disabled death itself. That is the formula. That is Christianity. That is what has to be believed. Any theories we build up as to how Christ’s death did this are, in my view, quite secondary: mere plans or diagrams to be left alone if they do not help us, and, even if they do help us, not to be confused with the thing itself…A man can eat his dinner without understanding exactly how food nourishes him. A man can accept what Christ has done without knowing how it works.

How comfortable are you with not knowing all the details? What does it mean for you to experience the truth of something while still being comfortable with a certain amount of mystery or unknowingness?
