40 Words in 40 Days: Sola

Sola

A Latin word meaning “alone” or “only.”

The Lutheran reformers used the phrase “Sola fide” to make their case that one is saved by faith alone – not by good works or anything else.

Romans 3:28

For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.

More than one “Sola”

For Luther, the essence of Scripture is God’s unconditional love for humanity as revealed in the works or merits of Christ alone (solus Christus) on the cross. We find acceptance before God only through the merits of Christ and his saving work alone. It is this saving word alone (sola Scriptura) that justifies the sinner by grace alone (sola gratia) through faith alone (solo fide). The Word of God is love incarnate in the person of Jesus of Nazareth and it is this Word alone that is normative for the Christian life.

A Prayer for Strengthened Faith from Martin Luther

Almighty God, through the death of your Son you have destroyed sin and death. Through his resurrection you have restored innocence and eternal life. We who are delivered from the power of the devil may live in your kingdom. Give us grace that we may believe this with our whole heart. Enable us, always, to steadfastly praise and thank you in this faith, through your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
