Pastor's Note

“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out -- plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” God’s Decree.

Jeremiah 29:11-14
The Message

These words to the exiled people of Israel were both prophetic and comforting. Not all prophetic words are meant to bring comfort to God’s people, indeed most of the time the prophets were speaking God’s words of correction or judgment!

These words, however, were different. Here was a reminder to a people far from the comforts of home, far from the rituals of temple life, that God was still in charge. As we look ahead to our life together at Good Shepherd we know that the world is always changing, but God is not. In order to listen and respond to the plans God has for us it is necessary for us to free ourselves from the burden of our long-term congregational debt. Anyone who has struggled with debt knows the effect it has in restricting the ability to make decisions, take risks and follow God’s call. Your church is the same way. We want to move beyond our day-to-day struggles to make our mortgage payments, to live in a way that all of our generosity is being funneled into fulfilling God’s purpose for our church.

Don’t get me wrong.  Our mortgage has helped us achieve some God-sized dreams already! But in moving beyond our debt we not only will have the satisfaction of knowing that we have paid for what we have, but that we, as God’s people, can listen and respond to God’s call in the days and years to come!

This month, I ask each of you to prayerfully consider how you might sacrificially participate in our Beyond… Capital Campaign, In the weeks to come you will hear many stories of generosity. You will be invited to participate as a generous giver, maybe in ways you hadn’t dreamed of before! I am thankful, always, for the many gifts and talents that are already generously shared by each of you in our life together. May we together prayerfully find ourselves on the other side of our debt looking forward to what God has waiting for us!

Thank you.

Gratefully,

BEYOND CAMPAIGN

From the Campaign Chairs

We are Bob and Ronda Beggs and together, we are co-chairing the upcoming Beyond Capital Campaign.  We have been members of Good Shepherd for the last 3 years, along with our daughters Allison (16), Amanda (14), and Ava (12).  Bob is a Global Equity Portfolio Manager at the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, and Ronda is a homemaker.

We were both humbled and honored when asked to co-chair the Beyond Capital Campaign, and we enthusiastically said: “YES!” What excites us about this campaign is what lies Beyond a successful capital campaign for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.  A successful campaign will eliminate our current debt in three years.  This will eliminate $275,000 in annual expenses and really allow us to dream about the future state of Good Shepherd.  Imagine the possibilities of deploying this money in mission and ministry in Madison, Verona, and around the world.

We hope that you will join us not only in dreaming about where God is calling us, and all of the wonderful kingdom work that could be accomplished with a better financial picture, but also prayerfully considering and discerning  how and where the Holy Spirit is leading you on this journey Beyond.

We look forward to meeting many of you in the days and weeks to come.

All the best,

Gratefully,

Bob & Ronda Beggs
