On Monday, October 17th Good Shepherd, in partnership with Bethel Horizons, will host an evening with author Jeremi Suri.

The event will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Madison campus, in Peterson Hall.

The format will be a brief talk by Jeremi followed by discussion and Q&A.

Food and beverage hospitality will be provided afterwards.

Overcoming Inherited Divisions

American society has inherited sources of enlightenment and division from the past. The inherited divisions continue to hinder our growth as a single people. This community discussion will focus on history, not politics, to help us all understand how and why we continue to struggle to bring people from different backgrounds and experiences together in our democracy. The discussion will draw on Professor Jeremi Suri’s new book, Civil War By Other Means, which examines the ways in which that terrible conflict was never fully extinguished and lived on to influence the development of our communities.

The point of our gathering is to move beyond politics by using history to find common ground. What are the past experiences that continue to distort how our society operates? How can we take inspiration from the achievements of the past to address the lingering challenges to inclusion and cooperation? The legacy of the Civil War is a reminder of what our society can achieve, and the work that remains. We have an opportunity today to learn from the past and make ourselves better. That is the hope for this discussion. Please join us.
