The Good Shepherd Summer
Scripture Challenge

A Verse a Week Each Week of Summer.
Talk about it, Chew on it, Memorize it, Live it!

This summer, we invite households to spend time with one verse each week. Memorize it, sing it, wonder about it, or simply talk about it together. Ask questions. Share stories. Carry the words with you into ordinary life.

And imagine what happens when all our households are chewing on the same words together—our littles, teenagers, parents, grandparents, and everyone in between. The Spirit has a way of connecting us through shared stories and shared language, making us more grounded, more compassionate, and more alive in God’s Word.

There are plenty of quotes, slogans, memes, and coffee mugs that borrow from scripture. Sometimes it is good simply to return to the source.

If your family needs a Bible, let us know—we would love to help!

Weekly Updates

Why Learn Scripture as a Family?

  • Scripture shapes our imagination as we learn words, stories and images that help us know God and know ourselves and understand the world around us.
  • Scripture shapes our vocabulary, giving us language for prayer, hope, grief, gratitude, courage, forgiveness, and love.
  • Scripture shapes our daily journey – providing both an anchor and a compass for what matters and guides how we live and treat others.
  • Scripture shapes relationships as we read it together it creates space for meaningful conversations, honest questions, and shared reflection across generations.
  • Scripture shapes our lives. Children and teenagers learn not only from what we say, but from what we return to. Practicing scripture together models a living faith that grows over time. The same verses can comfort, challenge, and guide us differently in every season of life.

Memorization Ideas

  • Use music.
Singing scripture helps it stick. Some verses below include song suggestions.

  • Repeat it daily.
Try reading the verse together at breakfast, in the car, or before bed.

  • Put it where you’ll see it.
Write it on a sticky note for the fridge, bathroom mirror, or dashboard.

Conversation Starters

  • Did anything today remind you of this verse?
  • What choice or action could we take today because of these words?
  • What does this passage show us about God?
  • What surprises you? What confuses you? What comforts you?

Take-It-With-You Idea

At the beginning of each week, write the verse on slips of paper—one for each family member—and tuck them into places you carry every day: backpacks, sports bags, lunchboxes, work bags, diaper bags, even shoes.

At the end of the week, gather them back together and write a memory from the week on the back. By the end of the summer, you’ll have a collection of verses and moments that shaped your life together.
