Get to know Emma’s story
Butterflies formed in my stomach. For months, I had been praying God would provide me with an internship where I could connect others through journalism. When a friend texted me a link to the Good Shepherd Digital Media Internship application, I felt as though my prayers had been answered.
As I logged on to the Zoom call for my interview on February 26, 2021, I wondered whether Good Shepherd would be the one — the place I would further myself both as a journalist and as a Christian. Within minutes of chatting with Eric Holmer, Jessica McCarty and Rick Blum, I only hoped Good Shepherd Lutheran Church would become a part of my story.
Since sophomore year of high school, journalism has been my why. From the moment my eyes open in the morning to the moment my head hits the pillow at night, I am driven by the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Despite what the front-page headlines may say, this world is overflowing with goodness.
Interactions I had while interning at the Cannon Falls Beacon shaped my outlook on stories. The firefighter I interviewed hospital-bed bound, the fifth-generation farmer I gnawed sweet corn with, the school secretary I sobbed beside — the people of Cannon Falls, Minnesota are the reasons I am pursuing a J.B.A. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
With a year of college under my belt, I can confidently say that Madison is where I am meant to be. Uplifting stories have been easy to come by. The Badger Herald, Kappa Alpha Theta and Greek InterVarsity have given me a remarkable sense of community. By the end of the summer, I am certain Good Shepherd will have given me the same. I am excited to update our website, post on our social media accounts and highlight the good within our community.
And, come August, I will remind myself of those butterflies in my stomach. Remind myself of when I received the text from a friend to apply. Remind myself of that post-interview feeling. Most importantly, I will remind myself of the prayers said before and after my interview on February 26, 2021.
He put me here for a reason this summer. I cannot wait to see what He has planned.
