In this sermon, we explore five of Jesus’s short parables about the kingdom of heaven, often called pocket parables because they are meant to be carried with you and turned over in your mind. From a mustard seed to hidden yeast, buried treasure to a merchant’s pearl, Jesus teaches that the kingdom of heaven is valuable beyond measure, often hidden beneath the surface of ordinary life, and brought near through small and faithful actions. Along the way, we reflect on real-life stories of ordinary people whose small discoveries and quiet efforts sparked something far greater than they expected, including moments from within our own congregation.
