BEYOND / The Needs of Some Outweigh the Wants of Others

A Story from the Seeland Family

Simply put, generosity to me is someone giving more than is usual or expected.  My first memorable experiences of generosity came as a child growing up in a small town in Iowa.  My parents owned a local grocery store, worked hard and made a very modest living.  Many times, I saw extra items given to needy people or people being extended “credit” that was later forgiven. They also made it a point to put something in the offering plate at church, almost never missing a week.  As I grew a little older it became apparent to me the lesson I had been taught was that the “needs” of some outweigh the “wants” of others.

Throughout my life I have thought it was important to support charities in various ways.  Now being retired, I have even more time to devote to the causes I feel passionate about.

My wife and I have been members for about three years and feel very blessed to call Good Shepherd our church home.  May we always consider 2 Corinthians 9:7 – “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
