Homemade Communion Bread Recipe

An At-Home Recipe for Communion Bread

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Spray 2-3 cookie sheets with non-stick spray.
Set aside 1 cup of white flour for future use. Do not dump in into your bowl!

In a large bowl, combine:

  • 1½ cups of white flour
  • ½ cup of wheat flour
  • 1½ teaspoons of baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda

Using a fork, mix together the dry ingredients.

Now add:

  • 2 Tablespoons of molasses 2 Tablespoons of honey
  • 1 cup of buttermilk

Stir well. It will be very thick and sticky!

When the dough is stirred well, set it aside. With your extra white flour, dust a flat surface where you can roll out your dough. (Just like you would for sugar cookies.) Also, rub a little flour onto your rolling pin and hands.

Scrape the dough onto the flat surface that you’ve dusted with flour. Sprinkle a little flour over the top of the dough. Knead the dough by pushing, then folding it. Add sprinkles of flour as you go, until the dough can be handled without sticking to your hands. Cut the dough into 4-6 pieces, and roll them flat, to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. As you roll, use a 4-5 inch diameter round container to cut the dough into circles. (Plastic Rubbermaid containers work well.)

Place the round pieces on your cookie sheets and use a dull knife to draw the sign of the cross onto the top of each piece. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven. The top of the pieces will not brown very much, but the bottoms may burn, so watch them closely. When the bottoms are a nice golden brown, they should be done. They will rise to a thickness of 1 to 1½ inches. Cool completely before storing in an air tight container.

Refrigerate if you make it a few days in advance. Freeze if you make it a week or more in advance. One batch usually makes about 6 rounds of the bread

Note: if you have extra little pieces, roll them out and bake them, too. Then you can sample them when cool!
