Meet Allison: Good Shepherd’s Summer Media Intern

Growing up so close to UW-Madison, I was able to see firsthand the comradery of what college life could entail, as trips downtown to watch sporting events were almost inescapable among my family. When I began looking at colleges, I was instantly drawn to the vibrancy that a large public university entailed, but the question of how far I wanted to be from home loomed over my head. While I loved UW-Madison, I had this inkling that perpetuated a desire in me to seek an experience outside of where I grew up, in hopes of creating a partition between my hometown and my college town.

After my decision to attend the University of Iowa, so much about my future fell into place, which fortified any doubts or moments of uncertainty that I experienced when choosing my future. I have always enjoyed writing and being able to take concepts that seem rather mundane and repurpose them to create an added element of depth. Before starting my freshman year, I had no idea in what capacity I would want to write or if I enjoyed it more as a hobby rather than a career. After recently finishing my first year of school at the University of Iowa in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, I’m super excited for the next three years and all that I have yet to experience as I continue my major in journalism with a minor in entrepreneurial management. In the future, I hope to pursue a career in investigative or broadcast journalism.

When I found out about the media internship at Good Shepherd, I was initially a little intimidated by what the work would consist of, especially with only one year of college under my belt. Despite my original nerves, I knew that my deep love for this church would carry me through the summer, diminishing any doubts I had about my own ability. My main passion is being able to share stories in a way that helps people to become more aware of what’s going on beyond what can be seen alone.  While my main passion is writing, I am looking forward to gaining experience in a plethora of different fields of work, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing group of people who continue to devote their time and talent to something so much greater. Outside of my work at Good Shephard, I will also be lifeguarding and teaching lessons at Seminole Pool, which is the pool that originally ignited my love for swimming and has become such a special place for me and my family. I have built such an amazing group of friends throughout my four years of lifeguarding there, and I’m not ready to give it up quite yet.

Overall, I can’t wait for what the summer has in store for me, and I want to thank Rick Blum and Eric Holmer for this amazing opportunity, as well as the Good Shephard Foundation for making this internship possible. I hope to deepen relationships with the congregation, and I know I will learn so much throughout the coming weeks!
